What is LidarOutline for?

I have been working on GIS, geomatics and airborn LiDAR related projects as a software developer for more than 10 years. One of the issues constantly faced by LiDAR analysts is managing large amounts of LiDAR files covering large project territories, in many cases acquired during different missions. My LidarOutline application is an attempt to make this data management easier.

LidarOutline is a lightweight browser based application that extracts the boundary (outline) of the cloud of lidar points from *.las and *.bin files and displays them on a map. It works on Windows and Mac on Safari with Silverlight installed.

How does it work?
Go to www.lidaroutline.com and click the “Start Project Now” button.
As you add LiDAR files to the workspace LidarOutline extracts boundaries of the cloud of points and places them on a map. Bing Maps serves the background maps and images. At any time any part of the geometry in the workspace can be exported and saved as a KML or Shape file. After you have done working with the files you can save the workspace for later use, or for sharing with others, as a .lcov file. Later on you can load the project again by selecting the saved .lcov file.

If you have some reference vector data (other boundaries or corridor center lines) as a Shape or a plain text (XYZ) file, you can load it onto the map as well. It will allow you to compare the LiDAR footprint (outline) with the reference lines.
